Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird That can not fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.
- Langston Hughes
The words to this poem move, touch and inspire me to never give up… to persevere, to be tenacious and to dream fearlessly. I believe education is the key to achieve our dreams… it is the foundation to enhance and build sustainable communities. I am committed to dedicating my skills, knowledge and abilities to make a difference. My broad range of skills and experiences are utilized to develop strategies, policies and procedures, and create a stronger educational experience for our community. I believe strong teachers, administrators and parents can all make a difference (individually & collectively). I believe one person can influence the path of one child and possibly an entire class and community.
The mentors and teachers in my life made a difference for me… they believed in me and encouraged me. I owe much of my success today to the people who took the time, to “SEE” me. I “SEE” children and appreciate how they learn in distinct ways and respect their creativity. I am also a product of educational / youth development programs, therefore I know the value of these programs and the positive impact they may have on a community. I am passionate about embracing the uniqueness of each child and helping them evolve into beautiful, glorious and powerful people. I focus on personal achievements, academic excellence, social development and self-awareness to develop the whole child. My aim is to challenge our educational / communal system (administrators, staff, students, parents & community) to help students learn and evolve into greatness… to achieve excellence in everything… to embrace who they are and to create unlimited possibilities.
I have two young children (Hannah Hassell & Nile Hassell). I grew up in Houston, Texas and at the age of 18, I moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico to attend La Universidad del Sagrado Corazon. I graduated Cum Laude and earned a BA with a concentration in Humanities: Languages & Literatures (English, Spanish & French). In 1998, I relocated to New York City to attend Columbia University’s School of International & Public Affairs. In 2000, I earned an MPA with a concentration in Community Development. From 1999 to 2012, I worked at the Harlem Renaissance Economic Development Corporation (‘99), Administration for Children Services (’99), Merrill Lynch (’99 – ‘00), JP Morgan Chase (’00 – ’02), New York City Fire Department (’02 – ’05) and AGL Resources (’05 – 12). I worked in various leadership roles with functional experiences in community development, diversity, consulting, human resources, business development and marketing. In 2003, I became an entrepreneur as the owner of Dream Events (event planning business). In 2008, I started Organizational Concepts Consulting (marketing/branding/business development consultancy) and in 2009, I launched another business: Beauty & Glory (natural hair/body care product line). In 2011, I earned an MBA from Emory University with a concentration in marketing research.
Inspired by my parents who own childcare centers, moved by my experiences with children (childcare, PTA, room parent, marketing/communications for childcare centers) and being a mother, active participant at my children’s schools, and an entrepreneur, I decided to channel my passion to make a difference by dedicating my skills, experiences and talents to create unique educational experiences for children ages 2 – 12 years old. Global Purpose Academy (formerly known as Legacy of Purpose Preparatory Academy) was founded in 2011 to create innovative multilingual and multicultural experiences to empower children to be international explorers, to develop a love for learning, to thrive in a global environment and to achieve excellence in all they do.
